In mezzo alle quotidiane notizie di squallore e desolazione è facile dimenticare che dall'altra parte del mondo ci sono persone che stanno lottando con la realtà di vivere nella povertà - prendendo decisioni sul come nutrire la propria famiglia, avere l'acqua e ottenere le adeguate cure sanitarie.

Attualmente Timor Est sta attraversando un periodo di estrema siccità, che sta portando alla malnutrizione, deficienza di micronutrienti, e la possibilità di danni cerebrali permanenti in migliaia di bambini.

La Foundation for Mother and Child Health attualmente sta operando con i seguenti programmi in queste aree: provvedere ai controlli medici e alle medicine per i bambini e le loro madri; distribuzione di micronutrienti alle famiglie con bambini piccoli, training per operatori sanitari nelle comunità; training per sviluppare le capacità delle madri.

£ 10 bastano per provvedere alle medicine contro i vermi per un anno per 10 bambini

£ 15 bastano per acquistare 3 polli per una famiglia e avere così una fonte di proteine: per un bambino fa molta differenza avere o no una fonte di proteine durante la crescita

£ 100 basta per un programma intensivo di nutrizione per 4 bambini

£ 1000 è sufficente per formare 15 operatori sanitari per la comunità

In the midst of daily headlines of doom and gloom, it is easy to forget that half a world away, people are struggling with the realities of living on the poverty line - making decisions about how to feed their families, fetch water, and get adequate healthcare.

At the moment, West Timor is experiencing a severe drought, which is leading to malnutrition, micronutrient deficiency and the possibility of permanent brain damage in thousands of young children.

The Foundation for Mother and Child Health currently has the following programmes operating in these communities: providing health checks and medicine for young children and their mothers; distributing micronutrients to families with young children, training community health workers; and providing skills training for mothers.

£10 will provide deworming medicine for 10 children per year.

£15 provides a family with 3 chickens which will provide an ongoing source of food. It could make the difference between a child getting enough protein, or not.

£100 will pay for a course of intensive feeding for 4 children.

£1000 will pay for the training of 15 community health workers
